Guide to Fall and Winter Coats

Fashionista's Guide to Fall and Winter Coats - Northwest BlondeThere is a nip in the air and we can all agree that summer is officially over. It’s time to break out your winter wardrobe again and pile on the layers. But what happens to style? Now that most people only see your outer most layer doesn’t mean that you can’t still be stylish and express your own unique style. This Guide to Fall and Winter Coats will help you select the proper jacket or coat for your style (and weather) needs.

Down Coat (aka. “puffer” or “quilted”) – Once the coat that guaranteed to make you resemble a snowman, the puffer coat has since had a makeover. These coats are filled with goose down or a similar filler to give you the best insulation for the coldest days. You can find this coat in various lengths and puffiness. Here in the Pacific Northwest, down vests are extremely popular but I tend to gravitate towards the thinner (but still just as warm) coat variety. To combat the puffer coat look, you can always belt it to regain your waist line.

Peacoat – Think classic cuts, slight military inspiration, and Blair Waldorf. Every self respecting fashionista should have one of these in her wardrobe. This is a simple overcoat that can be worn from fall all the way into spring and comes in a variety of colors and lengths. For a classic wardrobe staple, search for one that hits at the hips and is in a neutral color like black, grey, or camel.

Trench Coat – Your classic rainy day wardrobe staple, the trench coat is another piece that every fashionista needs in her wardrobe. Classic camel can also be swapped out for black but best stick to neutrals for this timeless piece. An no need to fret if you can’t shell out high prices for the Burberry grand-daddy of them all. Trench coats can now be found in all price points that will make even the fashionista on a budget happy.

Parka – Your all weather reliable. This is a jacket that can keep you warm in fall and dry from the elements. Not the most glamourous of coats but it can definitely be a staple day-to-day piece. Look for practical details when picking out your parka. Does it have a hood? Is the hood removable? Is it water proof or weather resistant? Is there a removable lining? Add some interest to this coat by looking for deep jewel tone colors and accessorize with colorful scarves.

Blanket and Wrap Coats – Both warm and supremely stylish, wrap and blanket coats have made a resurgence. From classic colors to elaborate patterns, there is a variety of options to choose from. There is something supremely ladylike and feminine about a wrap coat. This style is a favorite of mine partially because of it’s ladylike look but also its bathrobe-like coziness.

Utility Coat – You can generally pick a utility coat out of a lineup by its classic olive green color. This is your perfect style for a casual look in mid range weather. While it may not keep you safe from rain, sleet, or snow, a utility coat is perfect for fall and spring as many come with removable linings that allow you to adjust how much added insulation you need from this casual coat.

Capes – The latest trend in winter coats is the cape. Most often seen in classic camel color, capes are the perfect topper for your fashionable night out look. Bring capes into your everyday wear wardrobe by pairing it with office appropriate looks and a jewel toned winter palette.
