Guide to Fall Sweaters

Guide-to-Fall-Sweater-knits-winter-Norsdtrom-JCrewWith cooler temperatures we all want to bundle up and get cozy in some knit sweaters. However there are so many styles and fabrics to choose from how is one to know which knits are which? To that I say, keep on reading and learn all about knit sweaters in my Guide to Fall Sweaters!

The Basic – Otherwise called a crew neck sweater, this is a basic staple to have in your wardrobe. This basic pullover will be the perfect companion in any weather, meaning that this style is perfect for various textures and thickness. For an ultra soft lux feel, opt for a cashmere crew neck sweater. It is perfect for the office as you can easily slip it over any top without added bulk. If cashmere isn’t in your budget, look for cashmere blends (aka only a little cashmere and mostly acrylic) or full acrylic, which can be just as soft and warm as cashmere these days . For a more casual weekend look, try a thicker weave and a slouchier cut sweater. Add your favorite denim and a structured bag and you are set to go from farmer’s market to brunch.

Turtleneck – The return of the turtleneck sweater is something that I rejoice over constantly these days. There is something cozy and comforting about a chunky knit turtleneck. However you can find turtlenecks all over the place these days: sleeveless, knit, sweaters, tanks, dresses. I find that turtlenecks work best in two forms. Either as a thick and chunky knit (but not wool because no one likes an itchy neck) or as a thin cotton blend. The chunky knit turtleneck sweater looks great with a tighter bottom, think skinny jeans or a pencil skirt, and are best in neutrals or solid colors to avoid the Christmas Sweater look. The thinner versions are great for layering under your favorite fall and winter pieces.

Cowl – The turtleneck that loosened up leaves you with the cowl. Cowl sweaters have gained a great deal of popularity as well and are nearly interchangeable with turtlenecks. They tend to work better with fabrics that fall nicely as a cowl drapes around your neck. Test out thinner variations of cowl neck sweaters with structured pants and skirts. This style also looks great in sleeveless styles so keep a lookout for cowls this fall!

V-Neck – Best suited to layering with a crisp button up and statement necklace, the v-neck sweater is another classic staple piece that everyone should have in their wardrobe. It tends to look best when made out of a thinner yarn with the exception of varsity sweaters. Use this sweater to layer on top of other pieces that aren’t suited for colder months but still need their turn out of your closet.

Cardigan – Cardigans are another layering piece that every fashionista needs in her wardrobe. In varying lengths and thicknesses, cardigans are perfect for fall when the temperatures are cool in the morning and evening but still warm during the day. The classic cardigan is another perfect piece to throw into your work bag if your office is chilly, while longer boyfriends styles are great for a more casual weekend look. And don’t forget the chunky knit (preferably cable knit) cardigan for your coziness needs.

Finally, remember to store your sweater correctly and always hand wash, dry flat, fold, and store away from the dangers of moths!

I’m a huge fan of cardigans! They are a great layering piece (especially for these weird falls where it’s cold in the morning and almost hot by the afternoon.) I’m starting to fall in love with cowls. I didn’t realize turtlenecks were starting to make a comeback… I’m excited. 🙂

Thanks for a super helpful post! I love all sorts of neckline in my sweaters. However, the most important thing is that my sweater is made out of cashmere. There is no cozier and warmer sweaters than cashmere ones!
