Fashionista’s Guide to Healthy Hair

everything you need to know for your healthiest hair

All fashionista’s know that the one accessory you must take the most care of is the one you can’t swap out and it’s on top of your head. Hair can make or break a look, give you tons of confidence, or make you swear by hats for weeks. After countless trips to DryBar, we all know the power of a good hair day and a great blow out. Taking care of your luscious locks will ensure that you always feel like you’ve stepped out of the salon and can conquer the world. Here are some simple ways you busy fashionista’s can do just that.

Manage Heat – One of the biggest factors to hair breakage (ie, frizz) is damage from heat styling. Addicted to the straightener? Try to give your hair a rest between days of heat styling and at the very least use a heat protectant. Summer is the ideal time to try and go 7, 14, or even 30 days without any heat styling. Up to the challenge anyone?

– Inside Out – The saying “you are what you eat” applies when it comes to healthy hair. A diet full of whole foods, few processed foods, and plenty of water results in a shiny mane of hair as it’s being fed all the nutrients it needs to grow long and strong.

The Add Ons – Sometimes even with the right diet we may need a little boost. Supplements like Biotin and Vitamin E have become popular in the past few years to help speed hair and nail growth. To each their own regarding supplements but if you do take a daily multi vitamin, chances are you are already getting 100% of your daily needs of both biotin and vitamin E as they are in most multi vitamins.

– Deeeeeeep Condition – Applying a deep conditioner at least once a week helps add softness and smoothness back into your hair (plus is a great excuse for an at-home spa night). This is especially relevant to colored or chemically processed hair and even more important in the summer months when hair is exposed to sun, surf, or chlorine.

-The Achy Breaky  – While it may feel great to have the wind in your hair, think of all the snarls that ensue. Those tangles more often than not lead to breakage, which means your hair needs a trim. How can you expect to have healthy hair if it needs to be cut constantly? By simply securing your hair with a soft elastic you may decrease damage and number of trips to the salon.

– Hit the Chair – Speaking of salon visits, make sure to get your hair trimmed up to keep breakage from creeping up the shaft of your hair and creating, you guessed it, frizz. This also helps create a shape to your hair so when you don’t have time for a blow dry or styling, it will still look like something. However for those looking to grow out some long luxurious Kardashian manes, don’t get trims too often (plus invest in some extensions 😉 ). You’ll just be removing the new growth with each six week visit.

– Start at the Source – A healthy scalp is crucial to healthy hair. Massaging your scalp before every shower helps get blood flowing to the area. This simple two minute trick will result in a healthier scalp and faster hair growth

My hair is soooo much healthier now that I’ve learned to leave the hot tools alone, haha. 🙂 Great tips!

It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes! I didn’t use any heat for a month and my hair looked amazing afterwards.

  2. Although I have short hair, it’s good to have these tips for conditioning and massaging your scalp. I have dandruff, so I have to be very careful with the products I use.

I’m the same way. I have eczema on my scalp at the nape of my neck. Do you have any favorite products?

I’ve recently learned that what you eat affects your hair so I’m hoping the goodies I put into mine help keep it glowing :).

Great tips! I do blow dry and curl my hair but let it dry naturally first . So agree on the heat styling products as I found a Loreal Fast Dry product that is inexpensive and amazing. I need to deep condition more! Your hair looks great, love the pic.
