So today I wanted to touch on a style of dress that I don’t often wear. While I love dresses, this is a style I don’t normally feel comfortable wearing. It’s the bodycon dress.
Not shocking to you, I’m not a size 2. I don’t look anything like the models you see wearing the clothes online and even less like the mannequins in stores. This is one of the reasons I tend to steer clear of extremely fitted styles like bodycon dresses. Why, you may (or may not) be asking? Because I don’t feel 100% comfortable or confident in my body while wearing these styles since they tend to cling and accentuate the areas on my body that I don’t love. However in the name of getting out of my comfort zone, I gave it a go!
Feeling outside of your comfort zone can a a good thing in life and in fashion choices, here’s what I’ve discovered about wearing a bodycon dress, even when I have body insecurities.
The easiest way to wear this fitted style and still feel confident is to wear a third piece that covers up your biggest “problem” area.
I’m self conscious about my middle so I wore a vest that cinches at the waist to give me more of a shape. Don’t feel 100% about your booty? Tie a chambray button up around your waist (if it works for Beyonce, it can work for you!) Not totally in love with your arms? Add a cropped jacket to cover up.
While it’s ok to have body insecurities and, in this instance, to cover up your biggest one, don’t try hide everything. To balance out your discomfort of wearing a bodycon dress, make sure it highlights one thing you love about yourself. I’ll use myself as an example.
I’m self conscious of my midsection, as I mentioned above, but I really like my calves and arms. They always look muscular no matter how little I work out, it’s great! So when I’m wearing this bodycon, I made sure the hem wasn’t going to cover my calf assets and that it had long sleeves to highlight my arms. Add the fact that it’s in one of my favorite colors and here we are! Me in a bodycon dress and feeling good about it at the same time!
Also important as we get out of our fashion comfort zones and into a bodycon dress, is to not underestimate the power of undergarments. A slip or pair of spanxs can make a world of difference when it comes to smoothing out any little lumps or bumps the dress may be showing.
And don’t think that wearing spanx means having everything sucked in and a day of discomfort! I’ve recently discovered these slip shorts which will rock your world. They come in shorts, tanks, and traditional slips and they are all amazing plus give us a little help when wearing these fitted styles.
Now it’s your turn! How are you going to wear a bodycon dress with confidence?
Let me know in the comments or tag me in your next insta! I want to see you looking killer and confident!
Until next time,

I love how you styled this dress under a vest! When I wear bodycon dresses I always need something overtop as well. I love they way they look but I always feel so exposed! You killed it with this look!
