Winter is coming here whether we like it or not so it’s time to break out the heavy duty outerwear. While I did a whole post on picking out the right winter coat for your needs last year, there is a new contender that has recently become more and more popular: the cape.
Why You Need A Cape
You need a cape because it is the chicest (although not the warmest) outerwear out there! It can be worn in a variety of ways and comes in a many different styles from minimalist to military to sleek crepe. Wear it to work, over dresses, with sweaters and knits, you can style a cape many different ways to suit your needs.
Us #ClassicStyleGirls, all need a cape in our wardrobes in order to say we have a well rounded wardrobe. Although it’s a surprisingly versatile piece of outerwear, that allows up to dress up jeans and a sweater but at the same time slip it over a dress when headed to a holiday party.
Finally, you really need a cape because it makes you feel like a super hero/villain/Napoleon. So in other words, a bad ass.
How To Wear A Cape
There are a couple different ways to wear a cape. First you have to decide what style you want. You can go full on wool coat or wear it as your third piece in the form of a cape blazer.
With a cape coat, you can wear them over knit sweaters, blouses, or plain old long sleeve tees. If you go the solid color route (see some of my favorite picks below), a cape coat is a great way to show off a beautiful sleeve detail or a print pattern on your shirt without freezing to death.
A cape blazer is easy to style into your work wear but adds a little edge to any outfit. It functions just like a regular blazer would but with a little more swish.
Finally, you can also find some dresses that have capes built into them! Talk about ultimate super hero vibes! These would be a stunning option for your holiday parties as all you need to do is add a pair of heels and some sparkle to be party ready.
Where to Buy A Cape
Since capes have come into vogue recently, they are available at tons of retailers and at every price point. I’ve rounded up a selection of different capes from across the net that should have something for everyone!

What a gorgeous cape!!
I knitted one, and then decided I needed long gloves to go with it–it’s funny how one piece can constitute another purchase!

Fabulous look! Love your reasons for wearing a cape! Too funny!
Capes are so fun, I love that they’re a different take on a regular coat, but still so classic. This camel color is gorgeous!
