For the 12 Days of Christmas, I decided to do a 12-day color challenge and wear something red every single day. It seemed like a simple way I could try to incorporate a little festive holiday spirit into my daily outfit but it turned into a fun exercise where I was forced to stretch my creative style muscles a little bit. Here are five things I learned from doing a style color challenge
1) I own a lot of red clothes
After I really started looking, I noticed that I own quite a bit of red clothing. Several sweaters, a skirt, and a dress, not to mention several pairs of shoes. Doing this color challenge forced me to get them all out and actually wear them. I heard recently that most women only wear 20% of their wardrobe, and this forced me to think outside of my 20% box.
2) Other people will notice
Especially here in Seattle and at work, people wear a lot of black and neutral colors so red really stands out. I started getting comments about my festive red after about the second day. The fun part was when several of my co-workers joined in and did their own festive holiday style challenges.
3) I dressed with intention
While I’m an advocate for dressing with intention, I’m not always the best practitioner of it. It’s easy to sleep a couple extra minutes and then just put on the same skirt and sweater combination as always. When you have to wear a specific color somehow somewhere, you are forced to think actively about how you dress.
4) Variety of outfits
Because I was actively thinking about what I wore and had so many red options, i never repeated an outfit in the nearly 2 weeks during this color style challenge. It’s amazing how just a little push out of the box yields so many more outfit options especially when it came to my work wear.
5) I was excited to get dressed
Since I knew I was going to be wearing something different, I’d make sure to prep my outfit the night before or get up a little bit earlier to pull something together. It became a creative way to start my day and really forced me out of my winter work wear rut.
Until next time,
Ana Luiza
