A Summer Girl’s Guide to (Surviving) Winter

summer girls guide to surviving winter

Ok so the fun part of winter is over, it’s January, and we still have several months of cold, rain, snow, and dark before spring. Now for us lovers of summer, the ideal situation would be to plan a week-long vacation in a tropical location but that isn’t always possible. Instead, we need to tackle cold, darkness, and general gloominess until the temperature warms up again

So for those of you counting down the days until summer (approx. 168 left to go), here’s your summer girl’s guide to surviving winter from one summer lover to another!

A Summer Girl’s Guide to Surviving Winter

FIND SOME LIGHT

First off is to find a source of light. One of the main sources for depression in the winter months is the constant darkness and the Mayo Clinic recommends a sun lamp to help ward off Seasonal Affective Disorder. To lots of people this tends to sound a little silly but as someone who lives in Seattle, a city known for it’s grey damp weather, let me be the first to tell you it really does work! I own this Sunlight Alarm clock and it was worth every penny.

BASE LAYERS (PLUS MORE LAYERS)

Take your winter wardrobe to a whole new level of warmth with the proper base layers. Just being warm helps you forget that it’s actually cold/windy/snowing/raining, so get your gear in order. I swear by this brand of base layers. You can find them at Costco or Amazon and they wear really well with denim (yes, even under skinny jeans) so go snag yourself a pair or four. You won’t regret it.

LOOK FOR SIGNS OF SPRING

There are little signs of life that are immensely hopeful in February that we normally don’t notice. snow melting, longer days, little hints of green popping up from the ground are all small signs that, yes opposite from how it feels, winter will end.

FILL YOUR TIME

Sure winter is a great time to huddle under the covers and re-watch all 9 seasons of The Office (guilty) but don’t let this become your whole life. Make plans with friends and keep active to help your sanity.
