Since we finally have some fall weather here in Seattle, I’m trying to be a good sport and not cry too hard over the end of summer. Instead, I’ve decided to embrace the fall season and all the layers and boots that it requires. Here in the Pacific Northwest, that means embracing plaid.
Now, most days you can walk around Seattle and find people dressed like lumberjacks in plaid shirts, timberland boots, and jeans. Sure it’s a look but not really one I’m getting behind. Overall, I’d say there are four core plaid pieces that I’m working with: a plaid button up, skirt, jacket, and scarf. These are easy pieces to style while still looking chic and stylish (no lumberjack look here).
I’ve found that my favorite and go-to plaid pieces all come from one spot, J.Crew. Why? Well, they tend to have a more grown-up looks (cut, colors, fabrics, etc). Especially for pieces like a plaid skirt, there’s a fine line between classy office look and Britney Spears circa 1998. Either that or my old school uniform. That’s another plaid skirt and sweater vest look I don’t need to repeat.
On a slight side note, I categorize plaid and gingham separately. Gingham is basically plaid for summer but like the cuter preppier cousin. Does anyone else think that way?
If you’re anything like me and need a little help styling some seasonal plaid without it looking like you are ready for a week in the outback, here are some more posts with my “best of” plaid outfits for some inspiration.

What are your go-to plaid pieces for fall? Do you wear a lot of plaid or just stick to gingham? Let me know in the comments.

Ha, that’s totally true, gingham is like plaid’s cuter preppy summer cousin. I get most of my plaid and gingham at JCrew too.
I love your plaid! I never thought about gingham being plaid for spring or summer but I guess that’s what it is! Your leopard flats are so cute. I have a pair myself that I love wearing!

I like your comment about gingham. I really never thought of it being a summer version of plaid! I like your take on plaid especially the fact you are mixing patterns!
