Nursing Friendly Tops and Dresses (That Aren’t Maternity)

nursing tops that aren't maternity

Greetings from Houston, TX! So the topic of today’s post actually came to me when I was packing for this trip to Texas. I don’t normally worry about wearing nursing specific clothing since I’m home with Teddy most of the time. It’s not a problem if I need to feed him and my entire shirt needs to come off because hey I’m in my living room and it’s just the two of us. However, I image that I’ll have to be nursing on the go way more than normal during this trip so I was looking a little closer at all my clothes. Can I nurse in this? Will it be easy if I’m in a public place?

I don’t want to bother buying any nursing or maternity specific because I’ve found that, overall, most maternity clothes are poor quality and overpriced and I’m only going to be nursing for a short time so why spend money on items I’d only wear for a few more months. So I searched through my closet and found some suitable tops but I also went online window shopping for nursing-friendly tops and dresses that aren’t maternity specific.

This basically leaves me with button-ups, the real MVPs!

Below I’ve got a list of highly rated button up tops, dresses, and jumpsuits that would be ideal for nursing moms. Several of these I already own and can vouch for.

One thing I do want to warn you about. As I was “researching” this post (aka online and in-person window shopping), I realized that some button front dresses and jumpsuits only have decorative buttons. You’ll want to either shop in person or triple check the product description.  Everything that I’ve highlighted here are functional buttons. Now about those nursing-friendly tops and dresses…

This chambray button-up has been the real MVP of my wardrobe lately. It’s lightweight enough for a Seattle spring and goes with just about all my pants and skirts. I have it in size small and it still fits over my new nursing bust size without pulling at the buttons.

This button-up tee looks to be a real winner. It’s a jersey material so it’s supposed to be super soft plus it comes in a bunch of colors and sizes. Just make sure to size down as it runs big

This is a shirt that I just ordered for myself. It’s supposed to be great for travel because it doesn’t wrinkle but I figured that would also make it a fantastic mom shirt. My usual white button-up isn’t up to it in the wrinkle department.

This button-up is so dang cute! I also appreciate that the peplum can help hide my new mom belly.

I’m dying over this top! Eyelet, ruffle detail, and button front! Think how cute this would look with white skinny jeans or a white denim skirt. So cute! It also comes in black

This oversized tee looks like it would be a great staple for summer. I think it would look good with pants or skirts

This is a shirtdress that I have in two colors and have been wearing a ton right now. It buttons up the front and doesn’t wrinkle at all, which basically makes it perfect for life right now.

This is another dress that I have (in a different color from a couple of years ago) and I’ve been wearing a ton. It doesn’t button all the way down the front but it goes far enough to do the trick. It does wrinkle fairly easily though, just fyi.

This is another dress that I have. I haven’t had a reason to dress up but this would be a nice option for a summer wedding or dressier events where you’ll have your baby.

I don’t think there are many nursing friendly jumpsuits out there so I had to include this one even though the price is a little higher than what I’d normally spend on a summer jumpsuit.

Here’s one more dressier option that is nursing friendly. I love the print on this dress. So cute for spring and summer!
