Last year, I talked about how I was transitioning to clean skincare. This all stemmed from getting pregnant and wanting to take the best care of my body for the little guy who was growing inside. Well, I’m still working on that transition but I wanted to touch base on how I’ve been thinking about clean skincare and beauty lately.
Off the bat, I wanted to say that I’ll never be 100% clean. I’m a little too in love with my long-lasting lipsticks to give them up for good. I’m never going to be all or nothing and I think 80/20 is a perfectly ok spot for me to end up.
Lately, I’ve been focusing on the ones that are on my skin the longest and are used on the largest surface area. These are things like moisturizer, sunscreen, deodorant, etc. I’ll touch on each product and category below.
Some things to remember when it comes to clean skincare: It will probably cost more than your average drugstore products. Think of it as buying organic versus non-organic. It costs a little bit more but you are doing better by yourself. You can mitigate the costs by swapping out products as they run out. No need to overall everything at once. You can also focus on the products that cover the most surface area and stay on your skin the longest – ie moisturizers, serums, etc. These are a couple of things that I’ve been doing so you’re not overhauling your life all at once.
Another aspect to clean skincare that I’ve been implementing is swap products from the skin outward. What I mean by this is I first changed out my moisturizers because they are generally the first layer of products that I put onto my skin. Then I changed my serums and sunscreen, they are the next layers that I apply. I don’t worry too much about clean setting powder because it’s one of the layers of makeup farthest away from my skin.
Clean Skincare Update
So the last time I posted about clean skincare, I had only swapped out three or four of my products. As you can see in the picture, I’ve got a whole lot more now to talk about so let’s get into it!
Sunscreen
I’ve been using SunBum mineral sunscreen this past summer for both me and Teddy. I have a spray cannister as well but since I’m almost always with him when I need sunscreen, I just end up using the baby version on both of us.
On my face, I’ve been using SuperGoop Smooth & Poreless Mineral Matte and I REALLY like it. It’s fantastic underneath makeup but even on days when I”m not wearing makeup, it gives softening and blurring effect. Not much but enough that I notice. It goes on like a primer so you don’t have a sunscreen feel on your skin all day.
Body Lotion
This is one swap that I made while I was pregnant and I’ve been repurchasing the same product since. I started using body oil instead of creams and found this one from the Honest Company that I like. I’ve also used their All-Purpose Balm on really dry patches and it acts much as Vaseline would. This is another product that I’ll use on both myself and Teddy.
Face Lotion/Moisturizer
I’ve raved about my love for the BeautyCounter Adaptive Moisture Lotion and I still love it. This is only my second tube of it. Each one lasts about six months since I only use it in the morning under my makeup
At night, however, I’ve been trying something new. Since I ran out of my favorite facial oil a couple of months ago, I’ve started using plain ol’ coconut oil on my face at night. It’s only been about a month but I like it. It’s simple, cheap, and leaves my skin feeling really soft by the morning. I use some of my cooking coconut oil and leave it in a small Tupperware in the bathroom for easy access.
Deodorant
To be completely straight with you, I’ve never been a huge deodorant user. I don’t sweat too much under my arms and I don’t smell either (I’ve asked various outside sources throughout my life to confirm this). However, when I do wear deodorant for when I go to the gym it’s generally men’s antiperspirant. So I’ve decided that I should dip my toe into clean deodorants. So far the Kopari deodorant has been a bust. It makes me really sweaty with every single use. Thumbs down. I think I’ll try Native next.
Cleanser
I was sent a PR package full of Boscia products including their Charcoal MakeUp Melter Cleansing Oil-Balm. It’s been great for days when I wear makeup since it gets everything off including mascara. Since it’s an oil-based product, it doesn’t strip my skin in the process.
Masks
I’m still using and loving my BeautyCounter Overnight Resurfacing Peel. It’s their holy-grail-miracle-working product for a reason. I see overnight results every time I use it and I really think that this is one of the main reasons that I never suffered from hormonal breakouts postpartum or since.
Another Boscia product that was in that PR package was their Charcoal Pore Pudding Intensive Wash-Off Treatment. I’ve been using it on and off for months now and I can’t honestly say if I notice a difference when I use it. I will say that it feels fantastic on my skin and I’m never dry afterward.
