I Tried the $30 Amazon Mumu So You Don’t Have To

$28 amazon mumu review - popular amazon dress - Northwest Blonde - Seattle style blog

Amazon $30 Mumu (size up! If you’re busty, you may need to go up two sizes. I’m wearing a medium and it just barely fit in the chest.) // Chambray Espadrille Wedges (these are so comfy considering that they are only $40. I’ve been wearing them all summer and not had a single blister) // Longchamps Bag (This is a bag that will last you a lifetime. I’ve had mine for nearly 10 years already. I’ve been using it as a baby bag since it’s roomy and zips all the way shut.) // Sunglasses (my go-to $10 shades. I don’t like wearing expensive sunglasses because I’m always scared I’ll break them.)

Guys, I fell for it. I was influenced by other influencers to try out the Amazon mumu that has become an Instagram sensation. I heard about it from Jess Keys but a bunch of other influencers have posted about it since then: See Anna Jane, Grace Atwood, Jess Keys, among others. Since I haven’t heard anyone post anything negative about this dress, I figured I’d give it a try and see for myself.

And to cut to the chase, I’m on the fence. There are things that I like about it and other things that I’m not crazy about. Let’s just jump into it.

Sizing and Fit

Ok so sizing is the biggest issue that I have with this dress. I heard that it ran small in the chest and armpits but I didn’t realize just how small. I got this dress while I was still nursing so I sized up to a medium thinking that would help with the chest sizing issues.

It fit. Barely.

I’ve never been bustier than I am right now but I think if you have any chest to speak of you should really size up two sizes to ensure a good fit. I can fit in the medium but it’s a tight squeeze and that’s with a thin nursing bralette, not a traditional bra.

This brings me to the next sizing related issue. You can’t tell from the photos but this dress is cut VERY low. I don’t know if it’s because I sized up but it hits me underneath my bra line. The ties allow you to pull the opening closed but it still ends up being a lot more cleavage than I normally would wear. For some people, this isn’t a problem at all but I tend to dress more conservatively and I wasn’t totally comfortable in this dress for that reason.

Otherwise, sizing is as you’d expect from a mumu style dress. It’s oversized in the sleeves and in the dress body which makes it very comfortable especially on hot summer days. You can see that it hits me at mid-shin lengthwise and I’m 5’5”. This has made it great for when I’m doing mom things because I can still wear a dress without feeling like I can’t bend over without flashing anyone.

Color and Prints

One thing about this dress is that it comes in a variety of colors and patterns. There’s definitely something for everyone. I opted for this blue and white pattern but there are several options for blue and white. There’s also pink, green, yellow, various multi-color prints.

Material

One of the reasons that I finally pulled the trigger for this dress is that it’s supposedly an easy breezy dress that’s perfect for these last dog days of summer. And it has ended up being just right for these last days of August. It’s some sort of synthetic polyester material but it doesn’t stick to your skin at all.

We had a couple of hot weeks here in Seattle (lolz, it’s been in the mid-70s and low 80s) and I wore this dress a bunch. It’s nice to feel dressed up because I’m in a dress but at the same time, the material is so light and airy that I was never uncomfortable.

Washing

Another thing that I heard from other influencers is that this dress shrinks considerably when it goes through the dryer, which I totally believe given the material it’s made from. I’ve made a point to wash it on the cold cycle only then hang it dry. I haven’t noticed any shrinkage but it does get a little wrinkled and needs a hit from the steamer to look brand new again.

Overall Thoughts

For the price, this dress is fine. It’s not the next invention of sliced bread but it’s nice for $30. I personally have a couple of issues with the fit because I’m just not someone who wears low cut anything these days.

One thing that I really like and haven’t highlighted yet is that the sleeves have elastic in the wrists so they will stay in place if you push them up to your elbows. Another current favorite shirt of mine has this feature and I totally love it! No more constantly pushing up your sleeves which is such a tiny thing but really annoys me.

There is a maxi version of this dress that I saw on Kelly in the City and I think I might like that one more than this one. I’ve never really been a maxi dress kinda girl but lately, I love how easy and simple they are, both for comfort and general mobility.

So those are my thoughts on the Amazon mumu/nightgown. If I had to give it a 1-10 rating, it would be around a 6, I think. It’s fine. Nothing that I’d write home about but I’m still getting plenty of wear out of it.

Have you tried the Amazon mumu? Do you buy clothes from Amazon in general? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time,
