Last week Teddy had his first (hopefully of many) trips abroad. We spent Labor Day weekend as a family of three in Victoria, BC, Canada.
It’s funny, we don’t consider ourselves to be jet setters or people who travel much. However, we end up going on some sort of excursion out of town at least once every other month…
That oddity aside, we packed our bags and headed to our neighbors to the North for the weekend. Andy has had a dive trip on Vancouver Island planned since December of last year and we decided to make a weekend of it. He left on Thursday for his dive trip then on Sunday Teddy and I took the Victoria Clipper up to meet him in Victoria, BC.
While I’ve been to Victoria, BC before, this was my first time on the Victoria Clipper. It’s the fast foot ferry that takes you directly from downtown Seattle to Victoria in about three hours. Otherwise, you have to drive north then get on a slow car ferry across the Strait of Juan de Fuca which takes much longer.
Side note: They used to play a really catchy jingle on the radio that was ALWAYS getting stuck in my head. “Clipper Vacations! Your getaway!”
Anyways, the trip up was a nice trial run for me traveling solo with Teddy. I’m headed to NYC with him in a few weeks and a three-hour boat ride may be a little foreshadowing for five hours in an airplane. Considering he was woken up two hours early then couldn’t nap on the boat because of all the overhead announcements, I think it went well. He made a lot of friends with the passengers and the crew.
Once we arrived in Victoria, Teddy and I had a few hours to kill before Andrew joined us so we wandered around the waterfront and the historic downtown area, taking in the sites and the people.
We ended up getting carry-out at a restaurant called Re-Bar. It’s a vegetarian/vegan spot that we recommended to us by several people. There were so many restaurants that looked good though. I snapped a picture of a couple of spots that ended up having lines down the block to get into them. Definitely something for everyone.
We ended our trip by driving back via the slower car ferry that I already mentioned. Other than it taking forever at the border at Blaine, it was an uneventful trip back home.
I hope you are having a great weekend! I’ll leave you with way too many cellphone pictures from our trip.
