Old Navy Overalls (mine are old but they came out with a new version for this year. It’s very similar to my old pair. I’ve also heard great things about this Madewell pair) // J.Crew Tissue Turtleneck (a favorite of mine year after year. The warmth of a turtleneck but with the comfort of a tee shirt. Read my entire review here) // Madewell Loafers (these have become my go-to everyday shoes. They dress up jeans but are also totally appropriate in an office environment. Read the full review here) // Old Navy Tote Bag (another oldie. This is the newer version of my bag that is out now. I also love this reversible option which is higher quality) // J.Crew Quilted Coat (mine is old and thrifted. This one is a nicer newer version but there aren’t many sized left in the red.)
Ok, hear me out. There’s a case to be made for bringing back overalls.
Several years ago, overalls had a moment and that’s when I purchased this pair. I wore them with pride no matter how many farmer jokes I heard from the peanut gallery. If Blaire Eadie said overalls were back, then they were back! I even featured them here on the blog to much Pinterest success.
Anyways, today I wanted to make a case for bringing back overalls. I’ve been cleaning out my closet and found them on the bottom of a stack of denim. That, of course, led me to stop cleaning and instead start a fashion show and, long story shorter, I’ve been wearing them regularly since. Why? Well mainly for three reasons.
First things first, overalls are very comfortable. They fit like jeans but without a waistband so there’s no discomfort when you sit down. Always a win, in my humble opinion.
Second, there is no gap between your shirt and your waistband because it’s all one piece. Personally, I can’t stand it when I have to squat down to pick up my kid and a gap forms between my shirt and my pants. This generally happens when I’m trying to get him into/out of the car and it’s raining. More than once I’ve had an extra-large gust of wind and rain blow through at that exact moment which then lands squarely on my lower back. It’s not pleasant.
Finally, they don’t need any adjusting throughout the day. This piggybacks on my last point but I find that jeans need occasional adjusting. Whether they need to be pulled up or pulled down, they generally don’t stay in place. And the pulling and the tugging is never dignified or cute. Overalls don’t have any of that. Just slip them over your shoulders and your good to go all day long.
So if you need just a little more ease and comfort in your life, give overalls a chance. You might hear a couple of farmer jokes but you might also get complimented on how cute you look because it is possible to pull off overalls as an adult. And in the end, you’ll be getting the last laugh as you comfortably move about your day.
My life has greatly changed in the past year where I went from corporate American to stay at home mom and let me tell you, overalls really are great for the later. No fussing with my pants throughout the day, leaving me free to chase my toddler around the playground without any wardrobe malfunctions. And I, for one, am here for it!
