Have you heard of the new “house dress” trend? As far as I can tell, it started last summer with the popularity of the Amazon mumu but has only become more popular in 2020 because we’re all spending so much time at home. I was very skeptical about these at first but it ended up being one of my most worn items this past summer.
What is a house dress exactly? It’s an oversized dress that allows you to be comfortable but still dressed in something other than pajamas. Think oversized, billowy, maybe there’s some smocking, maybe it’s just all about the potato sack vibe but with comfortable fabrics and beautiful patterns. Mix caftan with a mumu with a tee shirt dress and you’re basically there.
They’ve actually been around a really long time (I remember my grandmother wearing them) but have evolved and developed new popularity this past year. NPR actually had a good article about the resurgence of house or nap dresses and they go into the history of these sack dresses.
Well, summer has come and gone but the trend is still here. So the house dress has evolved from a summer item to a fall item. I wanted to share some of my top picks for house dresses that can convert to colder weather.
The OG. The one that started it all. Tha Amazon mumu.
I own this dress in blue and white but it comes in about 12 other colors including this lovely yellow.
This is the sweater dress from J.Crew. The material is heavier than your standard tee shirt dress so it should transition into fall and winter better.
It’s also available in navy.
The Hill House Nap dress became insanely popular this past summer. They just launched their fall collection and it includes gems like this plaid nap dress.
If you want one of these, move fast because they are already sold out in some sizes.
Ok so this is legit a nightgown from LL Bean but if you want that plaid Hill House look but need the warmth of flannel because you live up north, this might be just the thing.
It comes in six different plaid options and has over 500 positive reviews
H&M has a startling number of house dresses available these days. Mini, midi, or maxi, they seem to be the place to go if you want an easy flowy house dress at a very reasonable price.
