On the same topic as yesterday, reading! One thing that I knew I wanted for Ted before he was even born was a love of reading. I read (skimmed) the book How to Raise a Reader by Maria Russo and Pamela Paul and they basically say two things. Read to your child and let your child see you reading. Of course, they break it down much further with suggestions and recommendations for different ages and stages.
Ted is still in the board book phase but he’s already a big fan of reading. At night before bed, he’ll pick out a book or two to read with either me or Andrew. He’ll even go to his bookshelf throughout the day, pull out his favorite books, and start leafing through the pages.
He’s not quite two but he has his favorites already. I wanted to share some of his favorites for any other moms out there or if you’re just looking for some gift ideas for the toddlers in your life.
If you don’t know where to start in getting a toddler library set up, might I suggest the Scholastic Book List? They have book lists by age and category. Granted it’s all their books but it’s a good place to start. The New York Public Library also has some great online resources for suggested Books for Kids
Because of this book, Teddy now calls all giraffes “Gregory”
This alphabet book is so beautiful. The same company also makes CountABlock for numbers and a Star Wars block book too.
My toddler can now say “octopus” and “narwhal” because of this peek-a-boo book
Ted’s a big fan of these books partly because they are the right size for toddler-sized hands but also because the Red book has firetrucks.
This colors book incorporates the senses as well with different textures on each page.
An absolute classic!
Ted loves this book because Santa’s beard is a different texture on each page.
I just think it’s funny because Santa’s a hipster in this book.
