I’ve been on the hunt for a cute and comfortable sweater dress for over a month now. I had some hopes about this one from Topshop but it ended up being REALLY short on me and I’m only 5’5”. I wanted to see what other influencers were wearing so I went to look on the LiketoKnow.it app and my findings mostly fell into two categories. Either expensive cashmere sweater dresses (I love them but they aren’t in my budget right now) or more affordable Target dresses.
Who would have guessed Target? I guess I don’t shop at Target often enough to appreciate their clothing section so last week when I ran in to get some swim diapers (Teddy’s in swim lessons and it’s the cutest thing ever) I took some extra time to look through the clothing. I have to say that I was pretty impressed. They have a ton of new in-house brands, which all carry affordable fast fashion options.
I went through and picked out some sweater dress options that looked promising and tried them on and documented it all to share with you today. Please let me know if you like this type of blog post. I did another similar one with the J.Crew Fall collection that seemed to go over well.
Now let’s get into the sweater dresses! Some things before we get started.
- Everything is under $30 and available in-store and online (although some sizes are selling out).
- There is a 30% off sale on these dresses through Wednesday!
- While some of these dresses hide underwear lines better than others, I’d still recommend wearing a slip or, my favorite, these slip shorts underneath.
- My sizing details: I’m 5″5′, around 140lbs, a classic pear shape, and I wore a size small in all of these dresses. Target sizing tends to run large.

Starting off with my favorite from the bunch. Pretty standard as far as sweater dresses go but I’m putting that in the ‘pro’ column. The fabric is a little thicker than I expected. That along with the ribbing helped hide underwear lines and any lumps and bumps underneath. It comes in a few color options but this was the only one available in store. I also like that it has a small mock neck that isn’t tight around my neck. It was on sale for $20
Don’t mind me just camouflaging into the wall. This was the warmest of the bunch. The fabric reminds me of the supersoft sweaters from J.Crew. The thicker fabric hides underwear lines the best out of the entire bunch. I liked the pretty rust-colored red shade but it’s also available in grey and black. I think this would make for a very festive holiday dress that would keep you warm. The knit belt is removable and I think the dress would be nicer if you added your own belt on instead of the knit one. This one is $24
Turtleneck sleeveless sweater dresses have always baffled me a bit. If it’s cold enough for a thick sweater dress, don’t you need sleeves? That hasn’t stopped me in the past so I tried this one on today. Things that I really liked about it: the color. It’s a pretty cream color that Ted would destroy in a single day. I also liked the weight and feel of the fabric. It was thicker but still showed underwear lines. I think that part of that was due to the color more so than the fabric itself. The turtleneck wasn’t one that folds over so it didn’t feel tight or overly bulky around my neck. What I didn’t like was the length. It doesn’t look particularly short in this shot but it rode up as I moved around. Not baby-safe!
This was probably my least favorite of the bunch. Too short and too thin pretty much sums it all up for ya. I tried to size up to make it a little longer but that just ended up having it be even more low cut and this is already at the edge of my comfort zone. If you don’t mind a dress on the shorter side (not my cup of tea) then you might like the style of this one but the fabric leaves a lot to be desired. It’s just so thin and cheap feeling. Which is a bummer because it comes in three or four other colors including a lovely wine color.
The most basic of the bunch. I have one very similar to this in black that I wore my entire pregnancy (you can see it in this post…or any of my later maternity outfit posts) because it was one of the few things that fit until the bitter end. The only issue that I have with this one is that the material was pretty thin. You couldn’t hide much underneath without a slip or something similar. This too comes in several other colors.
This is the same as the red dress in grey and a larger size. I don’t think that it looks as good oversized as it does slightly more fitted at my normal size.
Thoughts on the sweater dress selection at Target? I was impressed that they had that many options in-store. Online it looks like they have more but sizes are limited.
