Northwest Winter Essentials – Footwear

Northwest
Winter Essentials – Footwear

Hello
all!

While
it is March and almost the start of spring, here in the Northwest it still
pretends like it’s winter by raining cats and dogs

(Not even the decency to
rain men! Really mother nature?! Really?!)

So
I thought I would bring you guys a small series on the things that I need in
order to function throughout the winter. While we don’t get many snow storms or
extreme cold, we deal with rain and lack of sunlight. So things range from
vitamin D and C to sturdy rain boots to proper outerwear.

First
off, let’s look at shoes!

There
are three staples that I reach for in order to combat any wet winter

First:
Duck Boots

These
are my number one favorites for rainy days. Also known as Bean Boots (LL Bean
sells them and has made this style popular) and originally made for duck
hunting, these boots have rubber soles, a short shaft, and are generally lined
with something warm and maybe even a little fuzzy. They can be worn with jeans,
tights, and leggings for a casual not overly bulky look.

I
love them because they are lightweight and suitable for anything ranging
between a light drizzle to lashing total downpour. They also work as a classic
staple in your closet!

Second:
Classic Rain Boots/Wellington Boots

The
classic rainy day staple: rain boots. Called “Wellies” in parts of the world,
rain boots serve the purpose behind their name and are perfect for puddle
jumping. Traditionally they are seen with a shaft ending just below the knee
but, more recently, shorter shaft rain boots are coming out onto the market.

I
personally am not a fan of tall rain boots and prefer the shorter ones. I find
that the tall (honestly they are the regular height shaft) to be too large and
bulky for me. I also tend to be the person who wears rain boots and 20 minutes
after you have left the house, the rain stops but you are stuck wearing the
shoes all day. Typical.

Third:
Chukka boot

These
Chukka boot have recently become highly popular in the Northwest. The originated
as military shoes for British soldiers to wear in the desert but have since
become a staple in many a Northwest fashionista’s closet. The term comes from a
play in Polo (but I couldn’t tell you anything about the actual play. Not a
huge Polo buff).

These have lightweight rubber soles and (depending on the
maker) are water resistant! The neutral colors make a great addition to any
casual outfit where you are looking for simple, classic footwear

Fourth:
Doc Martins
Last but
not least are Doc Martins.
These are
boots with non-nonsense-no-rain-or-cold-will-get-through-me soles. Seriously
heavy duty. After breaking them in, these shoes will last you a lifetime (with
the proper care of course)
Now I don’t
have a whole lot to say on these as I am not a huge fan and have never owned a
pair. I find them to be too large and clunky for me, not to mention heavy and
difficult to break in.
However, I
have friends who swear by them in the winter, especially on days with slush on
the ground.

And after
all that is said and done…
Wear what
ever makes you feel good. Don’t let fashion or trends crimp your style!
Let me know
what are your winter footwear essentials?
Until next
time!
