A Short Girl’s Guide to Wearing Over the Knee Boots
I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your notice but over the knee boots (or OTK boots) are still going strong this fall. These boots are on the feet (and legs) of every celebrity, model, and blogger. However as a shorter gal, I didn’t think that I could rock this trend for the longest time. “These boots are for people with long legs” I thought as I lusted over outfit after outfit.
But that is simply not the case!
To all the short girls out there, don’t be fooled (like I was) into thinking you can’t wear OTK boots. Not only can you rock this trend but you can make it work for you! Yes, you can actually appear longer and taller when wearing these boots! Keep reading to see the why and how to wear OTK boots!
WHY WEAR OTK BOOTS (even if you’re not 5’9”)
So why should all my shorter girls invest in a pair of OTK boots? Well they are crazy stylish for one! If all the top models, bloggers, and style icons are wearing it, then you know it’s a trend. But don’t think that only models can wear these boots.
Contrary to what you may think, OTK boots can give the illusion of having legs for days. Don’t let those models fool you (ok they probably do have legs for miles but it’s a trick we can all apply!) It’s as easy as picking the proper color! Yes, it’s actually that easy.
While this trend may have started with Stuart Weitzman, you don’t have to shell out $700 for a pair of boots anymore. Since this style has become so insanely popular, you can find a great pair of OTK boots, both with and without heels, at every price range. You can find all the best look-a-likes here
3 TIPS FOR SHORT GIRLS
1) Pick a Dark Color
We all know that darker colors are slimming but they are also lengthening! Wearing a black pair of boots will add length to your legs without even trying. Pair your OTK boots with black leggings or jeans and say “hello runway legs!”
2) Think of Your Hemline
One thing I always try to think of when wearing OTK boots is my hemline. Try to either show a little skin between boot and skirt, like this look today, or have a longer outer layer hit below your boot edge.
The key is to not have your hems end at the same point as your boots. Why? Because this creates a harsh line across your body essentially ‘cutting’ your legs and making them appear shorter. Instead with hem lines that alternate at different points across your body, it creates an optical illusion of tiers or , in our case, height
3) Get a Proper Fit
Having OTK boots that are properly fitted to your legs makes a world of difference for us shorter girls. Any sagging in our boots adds visual weight and drags the eye downward, which is not something we need. This means making sure you choose a pair of boots that are snug around your calf and knee rather than a slouchy pair or ones that might loosen over time
